Recently, I was flying home from a content conference and started speaking with a new graduate in digital marketing who also attended. She mentioned how nervous she was starting her job search with all the expectations of assumptions of “what to be” in a new career.

I politely suggested to take it slow in her expectations and concentrate on her first job where you can learn from a good team and boss. Then re-evaluate after a year or so once you get some experience.

I mostly spoke about the following with her;

Learn the basics: Familiarize yourself with the different channels and strategies used in digital marketing, such as search engine optimization (SEO), pay-per-click advertising (PPC), social media marketing, and email marketing.

Be curious: Keep up with the latest trends and best practices in digital marketing. Read industry blogs, attend webinars, and participate in online communities to stay informed.

Be data-driven: Understand the importance of metrics and data in digital marketing, and learn how to use tools such as Google Analytics to track and analyze performance.

Be creative: Digital marketing is a constantly evolving field, and being able to think outside the box and come up with new ideas is key to success.

Be a team player: Collaboration is essential in digital marketing, and you will likely be working with other departments and teams within the company. Be open to feedback and ideas, and work well with others.

Be Patience: Building a successful digital marketing campaign takes time and patience. It's important to test and optimize your campaigns regularly, and be persistent in your efforts to achieve your goals.

By following these tips, you'll be well on your way to success in the digital marketing industry. Remember to stay curious, be creative, and most importantly, be patient. With hard work and dedication, you'll be able to create campaigns that effectively reach and engage your target audience, resulting in increased conversions and sales.
